First time in Indonesia: what to sort before a Komodo boat trip
Updated 10 October 2026
Most visitors need a 30-day visa, a passport valid for six months, an onward ticket and the free All Indonesia arrival card. You'll fly into Labuan Bajo via Bali or Jakarta, should carry rupiah in cash and can expect no signal at sea. Every table below marks each fact as either checked or one to verify before you travel.
Entry: visa, passport and the arrival card
Start with your passport. It needs six months' validity from the day you land and two blank pages, and officers will ask to see an onward or return ticket, so keep that somewhere handy.
Citizens of 97 countries can buy a 30-day visa on arrival, or apply for the same visa online, as an e-VoA, before they fly. An e-VoA has to be approved before you land. Use only the official immigration portal, as third-party agents add their own fee. The free All Indonesia arrival card must be submitted within the 72 hours before you arrive. If you travel via Bali, foreign visitors also pay a separate tourist levy, which is in the table.
One to verify before you travel: the visa fee. The table shows the figure we could confirm. An increase was announced in August 2026, but we found no start date and no regulation behind it, so we don't treat the new figure as fact. Check the portal in the week you fly. According to the announcement, applying online in advance will cost less than paying on arrival.
We're a charter desk, not an immigration office, and for your nationality the official list beats this page every time. Check it first, then book your flights.
| Visa on Arrival (VoA) is open to nationals of 97 listed countries; other nationalities must obtain a visa in advance through evisa.imigrasi.go.id | 97 countries (incl. most of Europe, USA, Canada, Australia, NZ, UK, Japan, South Korea, China, India, Gulf states) Regional immigration office page (updated 4 Nov 2025) says 97 countries; detik (24 Jan 2026, citing Ditjen Imigrasi) gives the same count and a country list. Show the official list link rather than reproducing it: https://www.imigrasi.go.id/wna/daftar-negara-voa-bvk-calling-visa (page would not load here). Permitted purposes: tourism, family visit, some business talks, government duties, purchase of goods, transit. Not suitable for volunteering, influencer/commercial content (gov.uk). ↗ |
|---|---|
| e-VoA is the same 30-day visa applied for online before travel (evisa.imigrasi.go.id); must be approved before arrival and then used within 90 days | Apply online; pay by Visa/Mastercard/JCB; e-VoA approval valid 90 days to enter 90-day entry window and card payment from travel2flores (updated 9 Oct 2026) and WeRoad (updated 19 May 2026). gov.uk confirms online application and that approval after entry is not valid. Warn travellers to use only evisa.imigrasi.go.id: third-party agents charge extra. ↗ |
| VoA / e-VoA price | IDR 500,000 per person (children pay the same) gov.uk page (last updated 7 Oct 2026) still states 500,000, payable cash or card on arrival. See voa_price_change: an increase was announced on 12 Aug 2026 but no effective date was found, so show 'IDR 500,000 (check current fee before you fly)'. Online card payment may add a small bank surcharge (travel2flores quotes IDR 519,500 for e-VoA by card). ↗ |
| Announced VoA fee increase: e-VoA IDR 750,000 and on-arrival VoA IDR 1,000,000 | Announced 12 Aug 2026 by Director General of Immigration Hendarsam Marantoko; NO effective date found; not confirmed in force Reporting conflicts: CNN Indonesia (13 Aug 2026) says 'bakal menaikkan' (will raise, not yet in force); Antara and RRI use present tense. Visasnews/Gebrak say the official portal still showed 500,000. No PP/regulation number found. Re-check evisa.imigrasi.go.id before publishing and consider wording like 'fee is IDR 500,000 and may rise - apply for e-VoA online in advance'. The announced logic: booking e-VoA online beforehand is cheaper than buying on arrival. unverified — confirm before travelling ↗ |
| VoA allows a single-entry stay of up to 30 days from arrival date | 30 days, single entry Also JOGJA regional immigration page and State Dept. ↗ |
| VoA can be extended once by 30 days (max 60 days total); extend before the first 30 days end | +30 days once; fee IDR 500,000; apply at an immigration office, at least ~7 days before expiry Online extension possible if you applied online (gov.uk). travel2flores (9 Oct 2026) says since 1 June 2025 a visit to the immigration office for fingerprints is needed, otherwise the extension may be refused: medium. Overstay fine IDR 1,000,000 per day (gov.uk, State Dept); over 60 days can mean detention, deportation, ban. ↗ |
| Visa-free entry (30 days, not extendable) for citizens of ASEAN countries | Brunei, Cambodia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, Timor-Leste, Vietnam travel2flores (updated 9 Oct 2026) and WeRoad (19 May 2026) agree. The old 169-country visa-free scheme was suspended in 2020 (Antara/Kontan). The official BVK list page (imigrasi.go.id) would not load: confirm before publishing. ↗ |
| WeRoad lists additional visa-free partner countries (Suriname, Hong Kong, Brazil, Peru, Colombia, Turkiye) | Unverified Single commercial source, not confirmed by any government page found. Do not publish without checking imigrasi.go.id. unverified — confirm before travelling ↗ |
| Passport must be valid at least 6 months after arrival date and have at least 2 blank pages | 6 months validity, 2 blank pages State Dept says the same ('6 months validity beyond your arrival date'). ↗ |
| Proof of onward or return travel is required to get a VoA | Return/onward ticket ↗ |
| All Indonesia digital arrival card (immigration + customs + health declaration) is required before arrival; it is free | Fill in within 72 hours before arrival at allindonesia.imigrasi.go.id (or app) Mandatory at all international airports since 1 Oct 2025 (Wego, updated 8 Jun 2026). Third-party sites may charge: official one is free. Carry the QR code. ↗ |
| Komodo Airport (LBJ) is listed as an airport that handles VoA | Yes (per travel2flores) Page advises checking that international flights are operating. Most visitors clear immigration at DPS/CGK/SUB and arrive in Labuan Bajo on a domestic flight. ↗ |
| If arriving via Bali: separate Bali tourist levy for foreign visitors, not included in the visa fee | IDR 150,000 per person (pay at lovebali.baliprov.go.id) Relevant because DPS is the main gateway to Labuan Bajo. Does not apply if you only transit airside; check Love Bali rules. ↗ |
Flights to Labuan Bajo, and the ten minutes to the harbour
Komodo Airport (LBJ) is two to three kilometres from town, about ten minutes by car from the marina. Most travellers connect through Bali, Jakarta or Surabaya. The flight from Bali takes roughly an hour and ten minutes, and from Jakarta two and a half to three hours. There are few direct international flights, so plan on a domestic connection.
The airlines and times in the table are routes we've seen and estimated block times, not a guaranteed schedule. Schedules change, so check them on the day you buy.
Our rule of thumb is to land the day before. The free pickup is at 09:30 on the morning you sail, from your hotel or the airport, and a delayed flight is the most common way to miss it. On a 3D2N, Vinca is back in Labuan Bajo between 11:00 and 12:00 on the last day, so book your flight home for after 14:00. If you can only land that same morning, send the desk your flight number and we'll tell you honestly whether 09:30 is realistic. The hotels page lists places to stay near the harbour.

| Most travellers connect through Bali (DPS), Jakarta (CGK) or Surabaya (SUB); Lombok (LOP) and Kupang (KOE) are smaller feeders | DPS, CGK, SUB DPS is the main international gateway connection. Dive Tribe lists SUB as seasonal (about daily April-October). Check schedules: they change. ↗ |
| Typical direct flight times to LBJ | DPS ~1 h 10 min to 1 h 20 min; SUB ~1 h 30 min; CGK ~2 h 30 min to 3 h; LOP ~1 h Operator pages (komodoresort says DPS about 1 h). Times are block-time estimates. ↗ |
| Airlines seen serving LBJ | Garuda Indonesia, Batik Air, Citilink, Indonesia AirAsia (DPS/CGK); Super Air Jet (SUB); Wings Air (Lombok, Ende, Bajawa, Kupang, Bima, Maumere) airportroutes.com data refreshed 10 Oct 2026; shows routes seen, not guaranteed schedule. Dive Tribe also lists Lion Air on DPS/CGK: low. ↗ |
| Direct international flights are limited | Kuala Lumpur (AirAsia) confirmed; Singapore (Scoot, ~2x weekly) reported by one operator only airportroutes shows KUL only. Dive Tribe says Scoot SIN Thu/Sun and AirAsia KUL Thu/Sat, and notes Jetstar Asia (SIN) launched Mar 2025 then shut. | Airport to town distance and time | about 2-3 km; roughly 10 minutes by car to the harbour/marina area Wikipedia: 3 km from centre; komodoresort: 2 km and harbour about 10 minutes. Airport taxi counter fixed price about IDR 50,000 to most town addresses (Dive Tribe, low); arrange hotel/boat pickup in advance. ↗ |
Money, phone, power and water
In practice, you'll be paying in rupiah cash. There are cash machines along the harbour road and at the airport but none on the islands or in the park, so withdraw what you need before you board. Cards work at hotels and bigger restaurants, often with a surcharge, while warungs, taxis and small shops take cash. The table gives typical withdrawal limits and fees.
Tipping is welcome but optional. Local guides suggest different amounts, so the table gives ranges. Tip at the end of the trip, in clean notes.
Every SIM card has to be registered against a passport. Telkomsel has the best coverage around Labuan Bajo, and an eSIM installed before you fly will activate when you land. Out at sea on Vinca, you'll only get signal again near Labuan Bajo, so plan to be unreachable. The power supply is 230 V with two round-pin plugs, and cuts are more frequent than in Bali, so a phone left charging overnight may not be full by morning. Bring a power bank. Tap water isn't safe to drink, so stick to sealed bottles.
| Currency is the Indonesian rupiah (IDR) | About IDR 16,000-16,500 per USD and 17,500-18,000 per EUR (mid-2026) Exchange rates move: do not hard-code. Rupiah is the only practical currency in Labuan Bajo (Dive Tribe). ↗ |
|---|---|
| ATMs: BCA, Mandiri, BNI, BRI along Jl. Soekarno-Hatta near the harbour and at Komodo Airport arrivals; none inside the national park or on the islands | Available in town; take cash before boarding Airport has only 1-2 machines and sometimes one working (Dive Tribe). BCA/Mandiri most reliable with foreign cards; BRI sometimes restrictive. ↗ |
| Typical ATM single-withdrawal limit | IDR 1,250,000-3,000,000 per transaction; ATM operator fee about IDR 25,000-50,000 plus your home-bank fees Newer BCA/Mandiri up to IDR 3 million. Daily limit set by your home bank. Decline dynamic currency conversion. ↗ |
| Cards are accepted at hotels, dive operators, boat charters and larger restaurants (often with a 2-4% surcharge); warungs, markets, taxis and small shops are cash/QRIS only | Carry cash QRIS generally needs an Indonesian account or local e-wallet. travel2flores (9 Oct 2026) says cards are unreliable across Flores generally. Suggested cash for a boat day: IDR 300,000-500,000 per person; multi-day: IDR 1-2 million in small notes (komodoresort, July 2026). ↗ |
| Tipping is appreciated, not compulsory. Check whether a service charge is already added | Restaurants 5-10% if no service charge; boat crew IDR 50,000-100,000 per guest per day (liveaboard crew box about 5-10% of trip price); rangers/trek guides IDR 50,000-100,000 per group (komodoresort) to IDR 100,000-300,000 (Dive Tribe); dive guides IDR 50,000-300,000 per day; porters IDR 10,000-20,000 per bag Two operator guides give overlapping but different ranges: present as ranges, in cash, in clean notes. ↗ |
| All SIM cards must be registered; foreigners register with a passport | Passport required; max 3 prepaid numbers per identity per operator Komdigi Ministerial Regulation No. 7 of 2026 (reported 27 Jan 2026); foreigners present passport/KITAS under Article 6. Telkomsel Tourist SIM historically also asked for the phone IMEI (Tempo, Apr 2024). ↗ |
|---|---|
| Telkomsel has the best coverage in Labuan Bajo and offshore; XL is a decent town backup but weak rural/offshore | Telkomsel first choice Signal is patchy on boats and absent at many dive sites; sometimes available at Padar and Komodo Island. Operator opinion, not a measured map. ↗ |
| eSIMs: install before flying, activate on landing; some are data-only; one passport can register up to 3 Telkomsel eSIMs | Typical 25 GB / 30 days about USD 15-22 Komodo Airport has a Telkomsel kiosk but prices are reportedly up to ~3x official outlets (IDR 400,000+ vs ~200,000 for 25 GB). GraPARI shop in Labuan Bajo can register SIMs (travel2flores). Prices change. ↗ |
| Mains electricity | 230 V, 50 Hz; plug types C and F (two round pins) Indonesia's official tourism site. Dive Tribe adds that power cuts are more common than in Bali, mostly brief, and boats have limited 12 V/USB charging: charge everything before boat day, bring a 10,000 mAh+ power bank (medium). ↗ |
|---|
| Tap water is not safe to drink; use sealed bottled or filtered water | Bottled water only State Dept: bottled water from major brands with intact seal is generally safe. Boats normally supply drinking water, ask your operator (no source found, not stated as a fact). ↗ |

Season, manners and health
The dry season runs from April to November and the wet season from December to March. Even in the dry months, July and August bring wind and choppy crossings. The when-to-go page has the month-by-month matrix.
Flores is largely Catholic, and Labuan Bajo is a mixed port town. Cover your shoulders and knees in town and in the villages, save swimwear for the beach and the boat, give and receive things with your right hand, and ask before you photograph anyone. On the park trails, every walk is led by a ranger. Guides advise keeping at least two metres from a dragon; that advice comes from local guides rather than an official park notice, so the table marks it as low confidence.
Get travel insurance that includes medical evacuation, as hospitals often want payment up front. Labuan Bajo has a private and a public hospital, and serious cases are flown out. Dengue and rabies are both present, so cover up against bites and see a doctor after any animal bite. No vaccinations are required for entry. Bring prescription medicines in their original packaging.

Booking safely, and what the port can change
Only book with a licensed operator, and only pay against an invoice that names the company, the boat, the dates and what's included. Ask for the registration number: ours is 1805260128363, and the operator box gives the Labuan Bajo address of PT Komodo Explorer Indonesia. Be wary of very cheap packages, of a boat that doesn't match the photos and of anyone who asks you to pay into a personal account. Travellers were still reporting being stranded after paying resellers in 2026, so keep your chat records.
The port has a say too. Permission to sail comes from the harbour authority, KSOP, not from us, and it can halt sailings at short notice. There were several closures between December 2025 and early 2026, and another in August 2026. Port rules can change quickly, so ask the desk what applies on your date.
Carry your passport on the day, because the boarding pass and the park ticket use your name exactly as it's printed there. If a closure changes the route, the fare stays the same and the route moves, and you should be told that before you pay.
| Book only with a verifiable licensed operator; check legality before paying | Ask for NIB/business licence, ASITA membership (ASITA NTT), an office in Labuan Bajo, a written itinerary and an invoice ASITA NTT (4 Aug 2025) and the Ministry of Tourism (27 Jul 2025, https://en.antaranews.com/news/369213/ministry-warns-use-trusted-sources-to-avoid-labuan-bajo-scams) urge verified operators and advance booking. Typical fraud listed by ASITA: unlicensed operators, boat in photos differs from boat provided, agents disappearing after payment, too-cheap packages. ↗ |
|---|---|
| 'Cheap open trip' or resold seats can end with no boat: documented cases of tourists stranded at the harbour after paying | Pay the licensed boat company or a verified agent; keep chat records Floresa (11 Apr 2026): three tourists waited five hours on 6 Apr 2026 and another group of 20 was held in 2025 after an agent failed to pay the boat owner. Cases ended without sanctions. Do not name the operators. ↗ |
| Buying a boat or trip from people approaching you at the pier, or from unverified drivers, is the highest-risk route; tourists without a booking in peak season are the usual targets | Book ahead; do not pay individuals without an invoice ASITA says tourists without prior bookings 'may turn to unverified operators'; a driver defrauding British tourists on 2 Aug 2025 is reported. No source found describing 'pier boat sellers' as a defined scam: the pier wording is an inference. unverified — confirm before travelling ↗ |
| Do not pay individuals or personal accounts without a written invoice naming the company, boat, dates and what is included (park fees, meals, harbour fee) | Invoice + company bank account Ministry advice is generic: verify payment terms and costs in advance. The 'company account' rule is common-sense guidance, not an official regulation. ↗ |
| Flying a drone in the park without permit is illegal; the Rp 2,000,000 per unit per day fee applies and a SIMAKSI special entry permit is arranged through SiOra | Apply at least 7 days ahead; permit + payment confirmation carried to the park Process/lead time from a single operator FAQ; the fee amount is from PP 36/2024 (see park_fees). FAQ
Can I extend the 30-day visa?
Yes, once, by another 30 days, making 60 in total. Apply at an immigration office well before your first 30 days are up, roughly a week ahead, and expect to go in person for fingerprints. Overstaying means a daily fine, and a long overstay can lead to detention or a ban. A 3D2N boat trip fits comfortably inside the first 30 days.
Is Komodo Airport international, and where do I clear immigration?
Komodo Airport (LBJ) was granted international status in April 2024, but there are few direct international flights. Most visitors clear immigration in Bali, Jakarta or Surabaya and then take a domestic flight of about 1 to 3 hours to Labuan Bajo. Before you buy, check that your route lands where you expect.
How far is the airport from the harbour?
Komodo Airport is two to three kilometres from town, about ten minutes by car from the marina. Once you've booked a trip, pickup from the airport or your hotel at 09:30 is free. If you take an airport taxi instead, agree the fare before you get in, and give the desk your flight number.
Will my bank card work in Labuan Bajo?
Usually, at hotels, boat charters and larger restaurants, often with a surcharge of a few percent. Warungs, taxis and small shops want cash. There are cash machines in town and at the airport, but none on the islands. Our invoices can be paid by card link, Wise, Revolut or PayPal, which adds 7.2 percent.
Which documents should I carry on the day we sail?
Your original passport, the park e-ticket or QR code, and a photo of each. The boarding pass and the park ticket use your name as printed in the passport, and the name on the pass has to match the boat's manifest. Keep your invoice, which shows our registration number 1805260128363, and your chat records to hand as well, in case any questions come up at the pier.
What if the harbour authority closes sailings on my dates?
The authority can halt sailings at short notice because of the weather, as it did in January 2026 and again in August 2026. If we cancel a sailing, you get a full refund within 14 days. If the sea or the park forces a change of route, the fare stays the same and the route changes. Insurance that covers sea travel takes care of the rest.
