Komodo photography tour boat: three light windows and a deck that moves
Updated 10 October 2026
The Komodo photography day has three windows: Padar sunrise, Pink Beach in morning light, and the Kalong bat stream at dusk. Vinca Deluxe Phinisi reaches all three on a 3D2N or longer, with GoPro, mirrorless and drone documentation included on the open trip and available on request for a private charter. The deck moves, so bring a monopod, not a tripod.
Three light windows, in the order they come
Padar at sunrise is the picture most people want. Guests leave the boat about 65 minutes before first light, so a headtorch matters more than a long lens on the way up. Sunrise is 06:18 in July and earlier in November, and the viewpoint looks over three bays with differently coloured sand. The climb takes 25 to 45 minutes to the main view, over loose ground.
Pink Beach comes next, in mornings that are calmer and softer. The sand is pale pink, not bright pink, and the tint depends on light and tide. Do not promise yourself a postcard colour; promise yourself shade, clear water and a reef close to shore.
The third window is Kalong at sunset. The flying foxes leave the mangroves about fifteen minutes after the sun goes down and stream out for roughly half an hour. A long lens helps. A charged battery matters more.

What is included, and what is not
The brochure lists documentation by GoPro, mirrorless camera and drone. It is part of the open trip fare. On a private charter it is not included; the desk adds it on request and quotes it separately. The crew includes two guide and photographer roles; we have not published how those two roles split, and we would rather say so than guess.
Drone permits for the national park are not in our fare. If you fly your own drone, the permit is a separate cost, and the park decides where it is allowed. Bring your own camera for work you will publish; treat the crew's footage as a record of the trip, not as a commission.
Power is another gap in what we have published. The brochure does not list the number or type of sockets in each cabin, so ask the desk before you bring a laptop and four batteries. Bring a power bank in any case, and spare cards: the local Wi-Fi on board runs off mobile signal, with no satellite link, so don't count on uploading anything at sea.

Shooting from a boat that moves
The boat has no stabilisers and the tender is a fibreglass speedboat with a Yamaha 40 hp engine. That is fine for landing at Padar and bad for a tripod. Expect to shoot handheld on the sundeck at dusk, with a fast shutter, and to wait for the swell between frames. Salt spray reaches the lens even in calm weather; carry a cloth and a rain cover.
The best deck for an image is rarely the one with the best bed. The upper deck gives height and wide views, but it also swings the most. If a sharp frame matters more than a sea-view window, ask for the lower-deck Balinese Room, then shoot from the sundeck in the morning.
Months matter. April to June and October to November bring calm seas and clear water. July and August are windier and busier, and Padar is crowded at sunrise in those months. Mantas peak in July to September and December to February.
| Month | Sea | Visibility | Mantas | Crowds | Rain | |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| January | rough | low | peak | low | wet | Wet and rough, with the lowest visibility of the year, and mantas at their best. Take the lower deck if your stomach is shaky. |
| February | rough | low | peak | low | wet | The roughest, wettest month, and a peak for mantas. The supplier calendar has listed no February sailings. |
| March | moderate | medium | good | low | wet | The last wet month. Showers ease, seas settle and mantas are still good. |
| April | calm | high | fair | medium | dry | The dry season starts, the sea calms and visibility is among the best of the year. |
| May | calm | high | fair | medium | dry | Dry, calm and clear: the dependable month for snorkelling and the Padar climb. |
| June | calm | high | fair | medium | dry | Calm and clear, with the south-east wind beginning to build toward July. |
| July | rough | medium | peak | high | dry | Windier and busier, with mantas picking up. Expect company at Padar and Pink Beach. |
| August | rough | medium | peak | high | dry | The windiest dry month and the busiest anchorages. Book early, and take the lower deck if you are motion-sensitive. |
| September | moderate | high | peak | medium | dry | The wind eases, visibility returns and mantas are still around: a strong shoulder month. |
| October | calm | high | fair | medium | dry | Calm, clear and hot, with fewer boats than July and August. |
| November | calm | high | fair | low | dry | The end of the dry season: calm water, clear visibility and the quietest sites of the year. |
| December | moderate | medium | peak | medium | wet | The wet season returns and so do the mantas. Late December fills with holiday travellers. |

A shot list for a 3D2N
- Day one: Sebayur reef and, at Manta Point, a current-drift snorkel with a camera on a wrist strap.
- Day two, before dawn: Padar viewpoint. After that, Pink Beach, the Komodo trail with a ranger, and Kalong at dusk.
- Day three: Kelor for a calm last morning on the hill.
Be honest about what is not guaranteed. Dragons are wild and likely but never certain, mantas come and go with the current, and cloud can flatten a sunrise. Our job is to put you in the right place at the right hour; the animals and the sky decide the rest.
If your project needs a fixed shot list and a tripod, a private charter lets you set the pace with the captain. A studio shoot needs a studio, not a boat.

FAQ
Is a drone included on the trip?
The crew documents the trip with a drone, GoPro and mirrorless camera on the open trip. On a private charter the documentation is not in the fare; ask the desk to add it when you book. Permits for flying your own drone in the national park are separate and not in our fare. Ask the desk what is currently allowed before you pack.
What time do we leave the boat for Padar at sunrise?
About 65 minutes before first light. Sunrise at Padar is 06:18 in July, so that means leaving the boat around 05:15 in the middle of the year, earlier in November. A headtorch is part of the kit, not an extra.
Can I charge camera batteries on board?
The boat has a generator and air-conditioned cabins, but the brochure does not list how many sockets each cabin has or what type they are. Ask the desk, bring a power bank, and carry spare batteries for the 7-person crew's drone shoots and your own camera.
When are the best months for clear photographs?
April to June and October to November bring calm seas and high visibility, which is the best combination for clear pictures. July and August have rougher water and more boats at Padar, where sunrise is 06:18 in July. January and February have low visibility but peak manta sightings. Pick the month by what you most want in frame.
Will I get dragons on camera?
Dragons are wild and sightings on Komodo are likely but never guaranteed. A ranger leads your group on a walk of 45 to 120 minutes, and you cannot enter the trail without one. Photograph from where the ranger puts you, use a long lens rather than step closer, and keep flash off.
