Low carbon Komodo travel: flying, ferry or overland to Labuan Bajo
Updated 5 November 2026
Low carbon Komodo travel starts with the fewest flight legs: one short hop from Bali beats routing through Jakarta. The slower option is overland via Lombok and Sumbawa, ending with a once-daily car ferry from Sape of about 8 hours. Whichever you choose, sleep a night in Labuan Bajo; the airport is 2–3 km from town.

Low carbon Komodo travel starts at the departure board
Most of the carbon in a Komodo trip is spent before you see the boat. It sits in the jet fuel between your home and Labuan Bajo. The biggest lever you control is the shape of that journey: how many legs it has, and whether any of them double back on themselves.
Komodo Airport (LBJ) has international status and a 2,650 m runway. The main feeder hubs are Bali (DPS), Jakarta (CGK) and Surabaya (SUB), with smaller links from Lombok (LOP) and Kupang (KOE). Airlines named on these routes include Garuda, Batik Air, Citilink, AirAsia, Super Air Jet and Wings Air. Routes and operators change often, so read every row below as check airline (checked on November 2026).
| Into LBJ from | Carbon logic | Status |
|---|---|---|
| Bali (DPS) | Shortest final hop for most international arrivals | Check airline |
| Surabaya (SUB) | Sensible if you are already in East Java | Check airline |
| Jakarta (CGK) | Longer leg; adds distance if you flew past Bali to get there | Check airline |
| Lombok (LOP) | Short regional link, handy after time on Lombok | Check airline |
| Kupang (KOE) | Regional link from elsewhere in East Nusa Tenggara | Check airline |
For Australian readers the answer is a dull one. Take the most direct flight you can find into Bali, then one hop east. Going through Jakarta only makes sense if Jakarta is where your trip already begins.
Flight to Labuan Bajo emissions: what we can and cannot tell you
We are not going to print a kilogram figure for each route. We have not been able to check one against ICAO or a similar standard, and an invented number on a carbon page does more harm than leaving it out. Use the figure your airline shows when you book, or run the same legs through a public flight-emissions calculator, and compare like with like.
What we can give you is the logic that holds whatever the exact number turns out to be:
- Fewer take-offs. Take-off and climb are fuel-heavy, so two connections generally cost more than one.
- No backtracking. Flying west to Jakarta and then east to Flores adds distance for no reason, unless Jakarta is home.
- Economy seat. A premium seat takes up more of the aircraft, and calculators reflect that.
- Lighter bag. Snorkelling gear is on board Vinca, so the fins can stay home. Bring your own mask if you are fussy about fit. Most divers are.
One more thing that rarely comes up: the cheapest fare and the lowest-carbon routing are often different tickets. Look at the routing first and the price second. When the fare gap is small, take the one with fewer legs.
Komodo overland and ferry via Lombok and Sumbawa
This is the slow option. It is the honest answer to how to get to Komodo sustainably without boarding a plane, and it suits people with time to spare, not people working to a tight leave form.
The final leg is the one we can speak to. ASDP is listed as running a car ferry once a day on the Sape (eastern Sumbawa) and Labuan Bajo link; the dossier listing is for the Labuan Bajo to Sape direction, so confirm the return direction too. The travel aggregator Rome2rio gives the crossing as about 8 hours, with fares listed from roughly USD 2 to USD 80 depending on whether you travel as a foot passenger or with a vehicle (checked on November 2026). We have not confirmed the departure time or the fare with ASDP ourselves. Check with ASDP before you build a plan around it.
The legs before Sape are the part we cannot vouch for. That covers the crossing from Lombok to Sumbawa and the long road across the island. We are not going to give you timings we cannot confirm. Budget several days, carry a fallback, and treat any blog that quotes a neat total as a guess.
Pelni passenger ships turn up in forum threads. We have no confirmed schedule into Labuan Bajo, so check with Pelni directly.
The practical catch: a ferry that sails once a day leaves no slack if it does not run. Arrive in Labuan Bajo at least one full day before your boat. That is said before the deposit, not after.
Labuan Bajo airport to town, and the night before you board
Labuan Bajo airport to town is short. It is about 2–3 km, roughly 10 minutes by car. That short hop tempts people into flying in on the morning of departure. We would rather you did not.
Our pickup runs at 09:30 WITA from your hotel or the airport to the harbour, and it is included on every trip. Lobby at 09:30, harbour soon after, bags in your cabin by late morning. That is the plan for the morning on land. The sea sets its own clock.
A connection from Bali that slips by two hours turns that morning into a gamble. The flights land, the transfer works, and the boat still has a day's route to follow. On an open trip the boat keeps to the set itinerary for everyone aboard, so a late arrival cannot simply shuffle the day.
On a private charter the desk can move boarding to suit your flight. That flexibility is real. A buffer night is still the calmer choice, and if you came overland it is the only sensible one.
Hotel nights in Labuan Bajo are not in the boat fare. Book the room before you book the flight, so a delay costs you a dinner in town and not a day of the trip.
Carbon offset for a Komodo flight: partial at best
An offset pays for a project somewhere else that is meant to cut or remove emissions. It does not take back the fuel already burnt over the Timor Sea. Quality varies widely between schemes, and we are not in a position to rate any of them. That is why we name none and quote no prices per tonne. If you buy one, read what the project actually does and how it is checked.
There is a better use of the flight. Stay longer once you are here. One return trip that carries a full three days in the park does more for the trip's carbon arithmetic than two rushed holidays. The 3D2N route covers Sebayur, Manta Point, Taka Makassar, Padar, Pink Beach, Komodo, Pimpe, Kalong and Kelor. Stop order follows tide, current and the captain's call, and wildlife sightings are never guaranteed.
The boat end has a footprint as well. Vinca has a Mitsubishi diesel main engine and a Yanmar diesel generator, and the tender carries a Yamaha 40 hp outboard. The sea part of your trip has a footprint too. The two paddleboards and the snorkel gear do not.
Park fees sit outside the fare. Foreign visitors pay the government entrance ticket of IDR 250,000 per person per day under PP 36/2024. Our park package for a 3D2N trip, paid on top of the boat fare, is IDR 650,000 for foreigners and IDR 350,000 for Indonesians. It bundles that ticket with ranger and local levies. It is not the government ticket itself.
An eco friendly Komodo trip, start to finish
Put the pieces together and the low-impact version of this trip is plain. One flight with as few legs as possible, or the ferry if you have the days. A night in Labuan Bajo. Then three days at one long table, with the paddleboards off the stern in the afternoons.
Plan the way home too. On the 3D2N and 4D3N routes we have you back in Labuan Bajo between 11:00 and 12:00 WITA. For open trips we recommend flights after 14:00 on the last day. Missing that flight and buying another is the least green thing you can do all week.
A few last details before the deposit:
- Wi-Fi on board is a local hotspot off the crew's mobile signal. It works near town and in patches between islands, and there is no satellite link. Download boarding passes and ferry tickets before you board.
- Vinca is a snorkel boat. There is no compressor or tanks aboard.
- On a private charter, the guide and the GoPro, mirrorless and drone documentation are not included. Both are available on request and quoted separately. On the open trip, both are included.
- 2027 dates are bookable. The price follows the current list until the 2027 card appears, and if it changes before final payment we tell you first and you may cancel free.
Current rates are on the charter page, and open-trip dates are on the departures page. Booking goes through WhatsApp, where the desk can line up boarding with whatever route you chose to get here.

FAQ
How do I get to Komodo without flying?
Travel overland east through Lombok and Sumbawa, then take the car ferry from Sape to Labuan Bajo. ASDP is listed as running the link once a day (confirm the direction you need), and an aggregator gives about 8 hours for the crossing. We cannot confirm timings for the Lombok and Sumbawa legs, so allow several days and check the ferry with ASDP before you commit.
Is there a ferry from Lombok to Labuan Bajo?
We have no confirmed direct ferry from Lombok to Labuan Bajo. The usual overland chain crosses Sumbawa and finishes on the Sape ferry. Pelni ships come up in traveller forums, but we hold no verified schedule, so check with Pelni directly.
How far is Labuan Bajo airport from town?
About 2–3 km, roughly 10 minutes by car. Our 09:30 pickup from the airport or your hotel to the harbour is included on every trip.
Should I stay a night in Labuan Bajo before my boat trip?
Yes. One delayed connection from Bali can cost you the first morning, and an open trip keeps to its set itinerary for everyone aboard. If you came by ferry, a buffer night is essential. Hotel nights are not in the fare, so book the room before the flight.
Do carbon offsets for flights really work?
Only partly. An offset funds a project elsewhere, but it does not undo the fuel your flight already burnt, and scheme quality varies. Flying fewer legs and staying longer in the park cuts more than an offset adds back.
